Prof. Carlos M. Duarte to Receive 2025 Japan Prize for Pioneering Blue Carbon Research

Prof. Carlos M. Duarte, Ibn Sina Distinguished Professor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), has been selected as a 2025 Japan Prize Laureate in the field of Biological Production, Ecology/Environment. The Japan Prize Foundation announced the laureates on January 22, 2025, recognizing Prof. Duarte's groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of marine ecosystems and his pioneering research on Blue Carbon.

Prof. Duarte's work ahs revealed the critical role of coastal habitats like seagrasses, mangroves, and salt marshes in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation and has shaped international climate policy, inspired conservation efforts worldwide, and continues to drive innovation at the intersection of ocean science and planetary health.

The official award ceremony is scheduled for April 16th 2025 in Tokyo, where Prof. Duarte will receive the honor from His Majesty Emperor Naruhito of Japan.
