The Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO) has awarded the prestigious 2025 John H. Martin Award to the groundbreaking paper "Plumbing the Global Carbon Cycle: Integrating Inland Waters into the Terrestrial Carbon Budget" by Cole et al. (2007), co-authored by Professor Carlos Duarte.
Published in Ecosystems, the study transformed scientific understanding of the global carbon cycle, demonstrating that inland waters—once considered negligible—play a significant role in carbon transport, storage, and emissions. With nearly 4,400 citations, this research has shaped both scientific inquiry and climate policy, even contributing to the IPCC’s Fifth Climate Assessment (2013).
